Well, this looks like a nice, small festival well worth taking in. A local festival (to Calgary, anyways) featuring Christian artists both musical and visual. It actually reminds of me of the Harvestmoon vibe, only a lot smaller.

If I didn’t have plans already, I’d go just to check it out. It really appeals to me. Just count the number of beards in the photo gallery from last year - it must be cool!

Seriously though, I think we need more festivals like this out our way. As the festival site says, we are “created to create”, and I think it is awesome to come together and share those creations - out in creation!

What do you think? Could we use something like this a little closer to Edmonton? Would you attend? Would you exhibit or play?

Perhaps a topic for discussion at our Meetup this coming Monday, August 18th?

You didn’t forget about that meetup, did ya?

Network Meetup 3 - Festival City

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008
August 18, 2008
7:30 pmto10:00 pm

Well, it is time for another very special gathering of artists of faith in and around Edmonton. Spread the word!

This time around, we will be meeting at The Carrot, a cool little Community Arts Cafe on Alberta Avenue (9351 118th Ave). This has been the hub of many arts-based initiatives the past year, and we will have the place to ourselves on August 18th.

The theme for the evening is “Festival”.

We will be joined by Christy Morin, Director of the Arts Alive! Festival, and President of Arts on the Ave. Christy will be happy to answer a few questions about running a festival and working with artists from a leadership perspective. We will also be joined again by Karla and Gary Adolphe, and most likely Caleb Friesen, of Jacob and Lily and Smallgate. Karla, Gary and Caleb live as arts missionaries, bringing their blend of wild percussion and passionate songwriting wherever they roam. This summer has taken them to many a folk-fest, and they’ll share some of that experience with us.

I know many “Creatives” have been busy with festivals this summer as well. From The Works to the ArtWalk, and more I am sure, we look forward to hearing your stories, and learning from your festival experiences.

As usual, this will be a great time to meet other artists, encourage one another and hear what we are all up to. It is a great time to pray for one another as well, and to get inspired to move forward in the areas God has called us to. We will also learn something about the whole experience of festivals, how they can benefit an artist and how to get involved with them.

Have a dream for a festival of your own? Bring it on …

Feel free to invite whomever you think would be interested to this special event, and we will see you August 18th.

PS >> Fancy coffee will be available from the Carrot for the regular prices, and we will, of course, have some “eats”. If you’d like to volunteer to bring something, drop me a line.

Network MeetUp 2.0

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Our next Network MeetUp is fast approaching and we will be spending some time with Karla Adolphe from Jacob and Lily! We will be meeting April 1 at 7 PM, and for likely the last time in a while, we’ll meeting again at my home. You can email me (see below) for the address. This is a bit closer to our last meeting than will be the usual timing, but it is a time when we can connect with someone really special.

Karla AdolpheThe Body Creative Network is a group of Christians excited about engaging their culture with the Truth and Beauty of Christ. Karla Adolphe and her husband Gary share that same heart. You can read about their journey with Jacob and Lily on their blog at http://www.jacobandlily.com/blog. Our evening together will include time to share what God is doing in our lives and our art, and time to hear from Karla, who is actively pursuing life as a full time Arts-missionary, and a time to dream and pray together. Perhaps Karla will even treat us to a tune?

One of the things on Karla and Gary will share with us is how artists fit into the body of Christ. In an unconventional ministry, finding their own fit has been a struggle at times, but it is a beautiful thing to know how you can best serve the family of Christ with your gifts. In preparation, you may want to read through the book of Ephesians.

SPACE IS LIMITED! Please note, my home is not huge, and so space is limited. That’s why I’m asking you to RSVP for this special night, and we will go on a first-come first-served basis. I’d love to fit everyone, but we will likely need to cap it off just over 20.
Please RSVP me at dave@bodycreative.com as soon as you can. You can also RSVP on Facebook at …

Even telling me you cannot come is helpful.

IN PREP >> Bring one piece of work you are really proud of. Try and make it one you haven’t brought before. Also, bring the answers to these questions …

- When has your art helped you connect with another person in a meaningful way?
- When has art connected with you in a meaningful way?
- When has art connected you with God in a meaningful way?
