Julie Painting at the Salisbury Greenhouse Show - May 08

For Julie, art is an exploration into God’s creation, an adventure into the depths and nuances of color, light, shadow and shape. She uses watercolor, often combining it with the Lyra pencils, to add interesting textures and dimensions to her work. She also enjoys making and painting on her own hand

made paper.

Julie Drew has always been attracted to the beauty of nature—mountains, oceans, animals, and especially flowers. Early on, art became a way for her to capture and participate in that beauty. Her passion for art led to a BFA in Painting and Drawing from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA, USA in 1987.

In 1997, Julie moved with her family to Edmonton, Alberta, where they now make their home. Julie continues to use her talents as president of the Emerging Artists’ Society of Alberta as well as teaching papermaking and other art lessons. Her art work and series of paintings are exhibited around Alberta.

The Creative Weekend: Digital Fantasy

Friday, October 10th, 2008

I mentioned a few days back that I had been learning my craft a bit with tutorials. I most often go to PSDtuts.com for this.

I am working on some images that require natural elements (trees, foliage, etc) and so I decided to try their tutorial on painting a fantasy tree scene. Not really my normal style, but I was excited to try some digital painting. I’m pretty happy with the results, actually. This was painted from scratch, with my mouse, using only tools that come in Photoshop by default. It was a bit of a “paint by numbers” exercise, but it did get me drawing and learning a LOT of new techniques in the process.

You can view the tutorial here.

Marcie Rohr at The Portal

August 12, 2008toSeptember 12, 2008

A new featured artist coming to the Portal Gallery - our good friend Marcie Rohr!

Here is what Marcie has to say about her show …

Marcie is a dreamer. In her dreams she has spanned the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, laughed and cried, lived and died. She dreams the vibrant hues and silky strokes that dance their way across her canvases. Art is the medium of Marcie’s spirit, a bridge between her sleepiness and wakefulness. When not in dreamland she is self taught, God taught, life taught, mentor taught. Marcie has participated in the Art Walk in 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2007. She also shared her art at the former Harvestmoon Festival in 2006. Marcie is a cofounder of Papercastle Art and Photography, an organization which seeks to give underprivileged children a voice in art. In August 2007, Marcie traveled to Pacasmayo Peru to do just that. The art from this experience is currently being displayed at the College Plaza Steeps Teahouse. Marcie is anticipating a solo exhibit in August 2008 entitled “Lost and Found”, a display focused on childhood. The bright pastel hues and dreamy ‘childscapes’ will lead the viewer into a world of their own as they contemplate what is gained and lost through the journey of life.
